The Legal Standard

What Article 5 Prohibits

Article 5 of Québec's Code of Ethics of Police Officers requires police officers to act in a manner that preserves the confidence and consideration required by their duties. The five categories below describe the conduct it prohibits.

Abusive Language

The use of obscene, blasphemous or abusive language.

Refusal to Identify

Failing or refusing to produce official identification when requested by a person.

Failure to Carry Identification

Failing to carry the prescribed identification during direct interactions with the public.

Discriminatory Acts or Language

Acts or injurious language based on race, colour, sex, sexual orientation, religion, political convictions, language, age, social condition, civil status, pregnancy, ethnic or national origin, disability, or a means used to compensate for a disability.

Disrespectful or Impolite Conduct

Being disrespectful or impolite toward any person.
