«Pour les crimes qu’il a commis», Christophe Colomb ne devrait pas avoir une rue à son nom à Pointe-Claire, estime un citoyen, Ray Coehlo. Il a présenté une demande pour que le nom d’une avenue soit modifié au conseil municipal pour la première fois en novembre. Depuis obtenu l’appui de la Coalition rouge, une firme de lobbying montréalaise, qui vise à éliminer la pratique du profilage racial et du racisme systémique. Black anti-racism groups lob volleys at Canada and Quebec

“Enough is enough” says Joel DeBellefeuille, founder and executive director of the Red Coalition, which along with the Black Class Action Secretariat-Francophone Division announced a series of actions during this year’s Black History Month. “It is unacceptable that in 2023 children continue to suffer in schools what I suffered myself 40 years ago! No child should ever be bullied and excluded because of their race or ethnicity, but unfortunately racism is a daily reality for many Canadian children,” said DeBellefeuille at a press conference this week , where he denounced reports of systemic racism and racist harassment of black youth at Rigaud’s College Bourget, which the Coalition served Friday in a mise en demeure.  Read More

Group says private school near Montreal ignored racism complaints

A private high school west of Montreal is promising to make changes, following allegations that administrators for years ignored complaints about racist bullying targeting two Black students. Joel DeBellefeuille, founder of Montreal-based anti-racism group Red Coalition, said the family of the two girls approached his organization after administrators brushed off their complaints. “They’ve been trying to tell them that they’ve been spat on, their hair pulled and they’ve been called the N-word on numerous occasions by other students at the school,” DeBellefeuille told reporters Wednesday.  Read More
Quebec sisters afraid to go school, say racism complaints ignored

A young Black student says troubling instances of racism at her school have gone on for years. She attends College Bourget, a private school in Rigaud, Que., and says there have been countless times when other students have called her the N-word and have even pulled her hair.
