Chief Coroner orders public inquiry into death of Nicous Spring

Quebec’s chief coroner Pascale Descary has ordered a public inquiry into the death of 21-year-old Nicous D’Andre Spring (pictured) who was killed after an altercation with Bordeaux Jail workers in December 2022. Spring was unlawfully held past his scheduled release at the jail along with two other inmates. The incident occurred when guards attempted to transfer Spring to a different part of the facility.   Read More
Police union head tells Montreal's new chief: staffing shortages 1st, community policing 2nd

The president of the Montreal police union says Fady Dagher, the new chief of the Service de Police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM), will have to address a shortage of officers before starting new community policing programs. Yves Francoeur, the president of the Montreal Police Brotherhood, said Thursday at Dagher's induction ceremony that the SPVM was losing officers and struggling with staffing shortages. Dagher is going to "realize very quickly that there is a lack of police officers in the SPVM," Francoeur said. "This reality that affects our workforce will unfortunately slow down the projects that he wants to put in place."  Read More
Red Coalition calling for investigation into systemic racism in Quebec jails

The Red Coalition is calling on Quebec’s Ombudsman of Correction Services to launch a special investigation into the extent of systemic racism in the province’s correctional facilities. The request comes a day after Quebec’s Chief Coroner ordered a public inquiry be held into the death of Nicous D’Andre Spring, a 21-year-old Black inmate who died after sustaining injuries at Bordeaux Prison in Montreal. Public inquiry ordered into jail death of illegally detained Montreal man

Quebec’s chief coroner has ordered a public inquiry into the death of Nicous D’Andre Spring last month at the Bordeaux jail, a provincial detention centre. The 21-year-old Black man died on Dec. 24, after being fitted with a spit hood and pepper-sprayed twice by jail guards. His detention was deemed illegal, as a judge had ordered him to be released the day before his death.  Read More

La coroner en chef du Québec a annoncé qu’une enquête publique sur le décès de Nicous d’Andre Spring sera effectuée. Cette annonce survient un peu plus d’une semaine après que des organisations de défense des droits aient demandé des enquêtes publiques sur la mort du jeune homme de 21 ans à la prison de Bordeaux la veille de Noël. Par le biais d’un communiqué paru mardi, la coroner en chef du Québec, Me Pascale Descary, a ordonné une enquête publique sur la mort de Nicous D’Andre Spring à la prison de Bordeaux, le 24 décembre dernier.  Read More
Public inquest to be held into death of man in Montreal jail

The chief coroner of Quebec announced Tuesday that a public inquest will be held into the death last Dec. 24 of Nicous D’Andre Spring while he was being held at Bordeaux jail in Montreal. Coroner Julie-Kim Godin has been assigned to preside over the inquest, the dates for which will be posted on the chief coroner’s website once they have been determined.  Read More
