Quebec told Longueuil police to disregard court order on racial profiling, says anti-racism group
on January 11th, 2023
An anti-racism group says it has copies of email exchanges to support its claims that Quebec told the City of Longueuil to disregard a court order on racial profiling. Joel DeBellefeuille, executive director of the Red Coalition, said he’s been pulled over by police a dozen times in the past 15 years. In 2012, Longueuil police followed him and his family as they were dropping off his son at daycare. As a result of that incident, he was awarded $12,000 in damages.  Read More

Read More

on January 7th, 2023
The civil rights group Red Coalition has called for an investigation into systemic racism following the death of illegally held 21-year-old black man Nicous D’André Spring at Bordeaux jail. Speaking at a press conference last Saturday, Red Coalition director of racial profiling and public safety Alain Babineau requested that video evidence of the altercation between Spring and prison guards be made public in addition to a public inquiry being called. “The family has very little information,” said Babineau, “no matter where it comes from, to know [what really happened], but it’s reasonable to think that there is video, and we ask that it be made public.  Read More
Anti-racism group calls for release of video in connection with Montreal jail death
on January 7th, 2023
A Montreal-based anti-racism group is calling for the immediate release of any existing video evidence of a physical altercation that took place in a city jail and led to the death of an illegally detained man just before Christmas. A judge had ordered Spring be released from the detention centre the day before, but he and two other inmates were still in custody a day later.  Read More
