Landmark tribunal decision in profiling case paves the way for major police reform in Quebec

The decision by the city of Longueuil Wednesday not to appeal a Quebec Human Rights Tribunal judgment in a racial profiling case means the city's police force will have to make major changes within two years, and experts say the decision could lead to systemic changes across the province.
"I'm super excited. It's tremendous news. It's huge — an excellent ending to 2020," Joel DeBellefeuille, the man who filed the initial complaint after being stopped by Longueuil police eight years ago, told CBC in an interview Thursday. Read More

MONTREAL -- A convoy of luxury cars made its way through Montreal Sunday protesting racial profiling and sending a message to Montreal police (SPVM) the day before the force is set to reveal its policy on street checks.

Black with a BMW: Longueuil resident wins another racial profiling case against police

A black resident of Longueuil was the victim of racial profiling by police, according to a decision by the Human Rights Commission.
This is the third racial profiling case for Joel Debellefeuille, who first filed a complaint about discrimination in 2009 and said he’s been pulled over dozens of times in his luxury car since then.
“I don't ask for it. I mind my own business. I guess curiosity gets the cat and they see me in my car and they feel like they need to follow me,” he said.
In this case, Debellefeuile was driving his son to daycare in a new BMW in 2011 when he noticed a police cruiser in his rear-view mirror. Read More
