Red Coalition puts teeth into fight against racial profiling

The Red Coalition has bolstered its toolbox of community resources and added voices to its team fighting the scourge of racial profiling. The anti-racism group’s new Lawyers Against Racial Profiling (L.A.R.P) program will serve as a go-to hub for members well-versed in the complicated landscape of racial profiling. Attorneys are often victims’ first line of defense, and L.A.R.P will recruit practicing attorneys in Quebec, offering membership across Canada. “The battle is real, the victims are real, and it takes key people in the right place,” says RC executive director Joel DeBellefeuille.  Read More

It is one thing for well-meaning and often effective citizens to come together in alliances to redress wrongs. ‘Gross incompetence:’ Man ticketed for contraband cigarettes says he was racially profiled

An Iranian man in Quebec says he was racially profiled by police when they conducted a “routine stop,” which he says led to over $1,100 in ticket fines for providing his insurance papers “too late,” possessing two packs contraband cigarettes and obstructing a peace officer. Iman Niknam held a press conference on Wednesday alongside the Red Coalition, an anti-police profiling organization, detailing the “gross incompetence and troubling unprofessionalism” by Roussillon Police when the incident occurred back on July 8.  Read More
Man alleges random police stop in South Shore led to illegal search, fine for contraband cigarettes

A Quebec anti-racism group alleges a random police stop on Montreal’s South Shore earlier this month led to more than $1,100 in fines – in large part for having what police deemed were contraband cigarettes. Red Coalition says Iman Niknam was stopped by Roussillon police in Sainte Catherine, south of Montreal, July 8 around 8 a.m. suspected he was being racially profiled and asked the officer why she was stopping him.  Read More
Montreal man to file human rights complaint over traffic stop by Roussillon police

A Montreal man says he intends to file a human rights complaint against police officers on the South Shore after a traffic stop earlier this month. Iman Niknam was on his way to meet with a client on a typical Sunday morning on July 8 when he says he was racially profiled by two Roussillon police officers.
