YOUNG LOCAL BLACK ENTREPRENEUR REFUSED THE USE OF WASHROOM AT A MONTREAL ULTRAMAR GAS STATION

For Immediate Release Montréal, June 16 , 2022
On the afternoon of May 30th, 2022, Mr. Noel Weslyn, a young local Black entrepreneur, stopped at the Ultramar location on 9815 rue Lajeunesse in Montreal to fill up his vehicle. Mr. Weslyn subsequently entered the gas station to retrieve his gas receipt for tax purposes. While inside the gas station Mr. Weslyn asked if he could use the restroom and was refused access by an employee who glared at him angrily.
Mr. Weslyn repeatedly asked if he could use the restroom, which then prompted this employee to yell at him that he could not while at the same time ordering him to leave the premises. Mr. Weslyn believes that he was targeted and discriminated against solely based on his skin color and is extremely upset that he was subjected to this debasing treatment by the Ultramar employee.
“I feel inhuman, I'm traumatized, I'm in shock and I can’t believe this just happened to me.” Says Mr. Weslyn “On behalf of Mr. Weslyn, the Red Coalition has submitted an official complaint to Parkland Corporation which owns Ultramar, concerning overt discrimination by one of its employees.” Says, Joel DeBellefeuille Exec. Director & Founder of the Red Coalition.
Mr. Weslyn has filed a complaint with the SPVM, and the Red Coalition will be requesting that a “hate incident” investigation also be conducted by the police service in this matter. “The Red Coalition believes that Mr. Weslyn was racially profiled and stereotyped as a “criminal gang member” by the Ultramar employee and treated as such.” Says Alain Babineau, Director Racial Profiling & Public Safety The Red Coalition will conduct a Press Conference to denounce this act of discrimination and release to the media a copy of the complaint sent to Parkland Corporation. Mr. Noel Weslyn will be on site to discuss the incident.
