A lawsuit brought by a former high-ranking Repentigny police officer alleges a toxic work environment at the force, as well as racial profiling during hiring. Jennings joins Red Coalition

“We have the potential to change the landscape in Canada” says Marlene Jennings, the new director of independent oversight and good governance of the Red Coalition, a federal-registered lobby group that works to end systemic discrimination and racism across the country. Jennings, who stepped down from her position as president of the Quebec Community Groups Network earlier this month, says the Montreal-based organization can bring a pan-Canadian approach to the issue. “It's precisely because of our bilingualism and diversity that this is possible,” she told The Suburban at a press conference at the Black Community Resource Centre offices in Côte des Neiges on Tuesday.  Read More
Marlene Jennings joins The Red Coalition

Marlene Jennings has joined The Red Coalition as its Director of Independent Oversight and Good Governance. The group is dedicated to eliminating racial profiling and systemic racism in Montreal, and across the country. “I share the values, which is to advocate and lobby for measures first for the recognition of systemic discrimination, anti-Black racism, anti-Indigenous racism, racism and discrimination across the board,” said Jennings at a press conference on Tuesday. “This organization has the potential to change the landscape, because if we do our work well, we will have tentacles across Canada.”  Read More
YOUNG LOCAL BLACK ENTREPRENEUR REFUSED THE USE OF WASHROOM AT A MONTREAL ULTRAMAR GAS STATION

On the afternoon of May 30th, 2022, Mr. Noel Weslyn, a young local Black entrepreneur, stopped at the Ultramar location on 9815 rue Lajeunesse in Montreal to fill up his vehicle. Mr. Weslyn subsequently entered the gas station to retrieve his gas receipt for tax purposes. While inside the gas station Mr. Weslyn asked if he could use the restroom and was refused access by an employee who glared at him angrily.  Read More
